Dark Alliance D&D Guide: Which Class to Choose

The four classes in D&D Dark Alliance have their strengths and weaknesses">weaknesses">weaknesses">weaknesses">weaknesses">weaknesses">weaknesses">weaknesses, but some are objectively more effective than others and of course each player has their preferences when it comes to archetypes and playstyles.

Each of the four characters in Dungeons and Dragons: Dark Alliance fit into a typical RPG archetype locker. If you know what you generally like about action RPGs, you might not have much trouble deciding which class you want to take for your first time.

However, given the third-person perspective and how the combat system works, you might need some guidance in choosing a Dark Alliance class that suits your playstyle.

Bruenor's Battle Hammer

  • Class: Fighter
  • Role: Reservoir

Dark Alliance D&D Guide: Which Class to Choose

Forces

This sturdy dwarf is a real tank carrying a huge shield and a big axe, thanks to his naturally high resistance stat.

His best ability is Anvil of Clangeddin, which lets him drop an anvil that both defends him against enemies and deals damage to them.

Bruenor's main utility skills are Taunt which pulls enemies in and reduces the damage they deal, and Whirlwind which spins him around dealing damage to all enemies within range of his axe.

The latter is similar to his Rising Ax move, while another fantastic move is Frostwave Grind which summons an unblockable ice vortex.

Although Bruenor is a very physically strong character, his movement speed is rather slow and he will need support from other characters to be fully effective.

You should also invest a few points into his Intelligence stat, which speeds up his cooldown.

Exploits and constructions

Bruenor is a typical tank with a lot of damage potential, so for the main solo damage build it is advisable to focus on his Hammer feat tree with the following main feats:

  • dungeon burrower
  • battle master
  • Inspirational leader

For cooperative gameplay, it would be better to use a pure tank build which can consume a lot of damage. In that regard, his Anvil feats are where you need to invest your points:

  • Shield Master
  • Heavy Armor Master
  • Indomitable

Both of these builds can be further enhanced by using his Forge feats which primarily increase stamina:

  • Sporty
  • Endurance
  • Live spirit

The following abilities are the best with the two versions offered:

  • Solo Damage: Clangeddin's Whirlwind and Anvil
  • Cooperative tank: Taunt and Battlehammer Brew

Drizzt Do'Urden

  • Class: Ranger
  • Role: Dualist/Assassin

Dark Alliance D&D Guide: Which Class to Choose

Forces

This drow elf is primarily a dexterity-based class with quick moves and attacks.

Drizzt's primary ability is Blink, which allows him to go stealthy for a period of time. This skill can be used well in dangerous situations that will give you time to heal and retaliate, and gain bonus damage once you are out of stealth.

His two offensive abilities are Cloud of Daggers which serves as AoE and Faerie Fire which inflicts cursed and frightened status effects on all enemies within range, rendering them defenseless for a period of time.

Drizzt's two best moves are Well of Darkness and Dark Hands, both of which work as powerful AoE attacks. But its ultimate move is Astral Companion, which summons a tiger to fight alongside you.

Although Drizzt's attacks are really powerful, he lacks self-defense, which makes him weak to a few precise hits.

His specific problem is the low starting Constitution stat which generally leaves him vulnerable, but that's less of a factor as he levels up.

Exploits and constructions

Since Drizzt's biggest advantage is his naturally high dexterity, it would be best to go for the Ranger build with the following best feats:

  • defensive duelist
  • Difficult
  • surprising

If your personal playstyle focuses on dealing lots of damage and developing critical hits, go for the Hunter version:

  • Double carrier
  • lightning reflexes
  • Second breath

Finally, if you want to be able to use his stamina to the maximum and develop his resilience during fights in the versions focused on Hunter and Ranger, mainly opt for the following expertise gifts:

  • Sporty
  • Endurance
  • Live spirit

The following abilities are the best with the two versions offered:

  • Solo Damage (Hunter): Dagger Cloud and Battle Trance
  • Cooperative Support (Ranger): Blink and Faerie Fire

Cattie Brie

  • Class: Fighter
  • Role: Archer/Sniper

Dark Alliance D&D Guide: Which Class to Choose

Forces

Just like Drizzt, this character is also based on Dexterity. Cattie-Brie's weapon of choice is a bow for long-range assaults.

Her best ability is Heartseeker Volley which sends a volley of arrows at unsuspecting monsters dealing damage in an AoE manner. Anyone affected by these arrows gets the slowed status effect.

Cattie-Brie's other two abilities focus on healing allies in the form of Spirit Healing and reviving them using the Resurrection skill.

Its two best moves are Piercing Shot and Lobbed Arrow which damage multiple enemies with a single arrow shot. If you manage to perform his Arcane Arrows ultimate move, the piercing effect will apply to all of your shots.

If you want to be able to not only effectively kill your enemies, but also heal yourself and others, then Cattie-Brie would be a great choice.

weaknesses">weaknesses">weaknesses">weaknesses">weaknesses">weaknesses">weaknesses">weaknesses

As Cattie-Brie is primarily a ranged character, she can be penalized for attempting to use her bow in a close combat situation. In this case, it loses a lot of damage.

This means you constantly have to keep her a certain distance from enemies, which requires developing a certain type of playstyle.

Exploits and constructions

Following his natural inclination for ranged attacks, it would be wise to develop his ranged damage as much as possible. In such a case, the Archer build will allow you to both increase its piercing shots and mitigate some of the melee damage loss:

  • Martial Adept
  • piercing arrow
  • Horde Breaker

For co-op play, Cattie-Brie can be a great support character in her Ruse role:

  • Healer
  • Endurance
  • Live spirit

If you think she lacks defensive abilities, unlock some of her stride feats that will help her gain resilience by using:

  • Difficult
  • Light Armor Master
  • Mobile

The following abilities are the best with the two versions offered:

  • Solo Damage (Archer): Heartseeker Volley and Captive Strike
  • Cooperative Support (Trick): Healing Spirit and Resurrection

Wulfgar

  • Class: Barbarian
  • Role: Assault/Shock Troop

Dark Alliance D&D Guide: Which Class to Choose

Forces

Wulfgar is another Force-based character, but his defenses aren't as good as Bruenor's. His attacks, on the other hand, are quite powerful.

Her best ability is Shockwave, which is an AoE attack that sends all enemies into a slowed status effect state.

Wulfgar's Primal Instinct ability allows him to gain bonus damage and armor based on missing hit points. Moose's Stamina is a nice support skill that provides him and his allies with powerful strikes.

Wulfgar's Rage Spin move is similar to Bruenor's Rising Axe, and his Spin of Fury ultimate attack also deals a similar damage type with his spinning hammer.

weaknesses">weaknesses">weaknesses">weaknesses">weaknesses">weaknesses">weaknesses">weaknesses

Wulfgar has little to no protection and defense mechanisms, causing him to struggle with the survival aspect.

This means you need to find really strong armor and spread most of your stat points over strength and constitution.

Exploits and constructions

If you're maintaining Wulfgar in singleplayer, focus on the damage tree, like the wolf:

  • Grand Master of Arms
  • brutal strikes
  • Tempus Fury

In co-op, Wulfgar can be a serious debuff if you focus on his Elk tree:

  • Robust
  • Medium masterwork armor
  • Blessing of Tempus

As usual, you can upgrade these two builds with some stamina and cooldown reduction:

  • Endurance
  • Live spirit
  • Pack rat

The following abilities are the best with the two versions offered:

  • Solo Damage: Hammer Throw and Shockwave
  • Co-Op Debuffer: Primal Instinct et Endurance of the Elk
