The official Elden Ring gameplay from FromSoftware has been revealed during Summer Games Fest 2021, offering a glimpse into the fantastical world of the creative minds of Hidetaka Miyazaki and George RR Martin. Yes, Elden Ring has an open world. And he looks huge.
In the trailer, an unknown character narrates through various landscapes that highlight the dark fantasy setting. She tells us that the Golden Order is "shattered to the core", and from there we see a figure riding through vast expanses of terrain. The character, presumably the protagonist, summons the horse, possibly implying that the horse will be an ever-available companion.

And the horse seems necessary, as the knight travels through forests, across a cleft cliff, and through the legs of a gigantic monster with a large bell hanging from its belly. These are just a few of the shots featured in the Elden Ring trailer, but one thing is certain: World = big. Player = small.
While most FromSoftware games are indeed open world with areas that connect to each other, Elden Ring aims to expand the reach of what players once thought was great. In a 2019 interview with IGN, Miyazaki stated that Elden Ring features larger, more open environments, and the extended world is just the basis of Elden Ring gameplay. The world mechanics, he said, are "designed with that kind of environment in mind."
Little is known about the game's story, but Elden Ring is an action role-playing game set in a dark fantasy world, written by FromSoftware veteran Hidetaka Miyazaki and author of A Song of Ice and Fire George RR Martin. Players can look forward to exploring dungeons, defeating terrifying bosses, and engaging in the familiar live-repeat mechanics that are all true to the From Software formula, all built on a much grander scale.
