FFXIV Sea Fishing Bait Guide

Fishing is one of the easiest parts of . to be completely neglected. Since there aren't many uses for fish, even omnicrafters and those with Botanist and Miner at max level tend to bypass Fisher.

Sea fishing is the one aspect of the class that even those who aren't crazy about fish in general or completing achievements end up getting into. It's faster than fishing normally is, and there are achievement rewards, including a mount, minions, and titles.

Plus, Sea Fishing is the fastest way to level Fisher by far, earning tons of XP for Anglers of any skill level and essentially trivializing the leveling process (not those pesky FSH quests, though).

In this guide, we'll cover how to start sea fishing, as well as the bait you need to increase the likelihood of triggering Spectral Currents while out on the ocean.

Final Fantasy XIV: How to fish in the ocean

Sea fishing is accessible to all those who have the profession of Fisherman, even from the first level. You can pick up Fisher, do his first quest, and pick up the sea fishing quest again.

Once you have completed the quest "My First Fishing Rod", you can begin sea fishing by speaking to Fhilsnoe (X:7.8 Y:14.5) at the Limsa Lominsa Fishermen's Guild, and starting the quest " All the fish in the sea."

To start a sea fishing trip, you will need to go to the ferry docks past the Arcanist Guild.

Activity is not unlimited. If you are unsure of the Sea Fishing start date for your time zone, head to Dryskthota (X3.2 Y12.8) at the docks to see when Sea Fishing recruitment starts again and to see the schedule for the next two days.

Sea fishing starts every two hours. If you see it starting at odd hours for you, you can bet it always will. The same can be said for hours. You can queue for sea fishing up to 20 minutes after the start time, in case you might be late.

When the time comes to start a sea voyage, you can talk to Dryskthota again to join the queue. You can do it alone or with a group of friends, as each fishing expedition allows up to 24 players. You will be thrown onto a ship with other players, whether you queued alone or not.

FFXIV Sea Fishing Bait

There are seven different places the boat can stop during a single fishing trip. Before leaving, talk to Dryskthota and see which three places the boat will stop at. Which bait you should take with you and use will be determined by where the boat is going.

The goal is to make the Spectral Fish (fish with green icons) bite, so that a Spectral Current erupts in all three places. Spectral Streams have highlight fish you won't see anywhere else and are the prime time for collecting points.

You can buy bait before you even go to Merchant & Mender right next to Dryskthota.

Basically, you will need these baits for each location to hook ghost fish:

  • Brine Sea — Krill
  • The Ciedalaes — Ragworm
  • Baie de Galadion — Ver dodu
  • Rhotano Sea — See dodu
  • Rothlyt Sound — Ver dodu
  • Southern Merlthor — Krill
  • Merlthor du Nord - Ragworm

If a spectral current appears and you really want to aim for the highest fish in the area, you might want to trade some bait.

It's more complicated, as the bait you'll want to use during a spectral current varies depending on the location as well as the time of day. We'll go over these below, but don't worry about this aspect if you're new to sea fishing or aren't very into it:

  • Bloodbrine Sea Spectral Baits
    • Day: Ragworm
    • Sunset: plump worm
    • Night: Krill
  • The Ciedalaes
    • Day: Krill
    • Sunset: plump worm
    • Night: Krill
  • Galadion Bay
    • By day: the ragworm
    • Sunset: plump worm
    • Night: Krill
  • Sea of Rhotanos
    • Day: plump worm
    • Sunset: Ragworm
    • Night: Krill
  • Son Rothlyt
    • Day: Krill
    • Sunset: Krill
    • Night: Krill
  • Southern Merlthor
    • Day: Krill
    • Sunset: Ragworm
    • At night: plump worm
  • Merlthor du Nord
    • Day: plump worm
    • Sunset: Ragworm
    • Night: Krill

FFXIV Ocean Fishing Rewards

There are a ton of titles related to ocean fishing, but more importantly, there are minions to obtain as well as an exclusive mount to earn through this activity.

  • Major-General's Minion - Earn 5 points on a single sea fishing trip.
  • Gull minion – Meet three groups of seagulls while fishing in the sea.
  • Minion Dolphin Calf – Meet 3 pods of dolphins while fishing in the sea.
  • Mount Hybodus – Earn 10 points on a single sea fishing trip.

This covers everything you need to know about sea fishing in Final Fantasy XIV. Keep in mind that no matter how hard you try to strategize, there's a chance you'll have a bad luck streak on any given sea fishing trip.
