Step Two: Catch the Fish

This part is tricky and can be frustrating the first few times if you don't know the mechanics. We've provided instructions below for catching the fish once you've cast your line.

  • Wait for a fish to bite. The weather here varies, but usually a fish bites within a minute or two. You can tell which fish is interested in your hook because it usually moves more erratically and jumps out of the water once or twice.
  • Once he bites, counter his movements. Don't start winding it right away, as that's the quickest way to break the line. You need to move your line with the mouse or analog stick in the opposite direction of the fish. If it moves left, you move it right. If it moves right, you go left. If he tries to move outward (away from you), you pull the line down.
  • Keep doing this until he gets tired. You can tell when he's tired because he'll stop splashing and stay docile. This is when you need to roll it up.
  • Wind it up by holding down the primary use button on your mouse or controller. If he starts thrashing and splashing again, immediately stop reeling him and start countering his movements again.
  • Repeat as needed until you catch the fish.
  • Third step: Sell it for rewards!

You can sell raw, undercooked, cooked and overcooked fish. Selling it to The Hunter's Call reps when perfectly cooked will net you the highest reward for that particular type of fish. However, selling it overcooked will net you the lowest reward, so be sure to check how long each fish takes to cook properly. Below are the names and locations of The Hunter's Call representatives who are interested in buying fish from you.

    • Aifrick: Roaring Traders – U20
    • Annick: Three Paces East Seapost – S9
    • Derrick: The Best Trading Post – F17

    • Merrick: Le butin de Stephen -L16
    • Serik: The North Star Seapost – H10

Once you master your fishing skills, you'll find it's a decent and fun way to pass the time while you and your crew cruise the ocean. It can also net you a lot more income than you do other quests, so make sure you don't let those fish spoil in the ocean!
