Fishing in Sea of Thieves was brought into the game in April 2019 as a fun new mechanic for the game. Shortly after, a new group was added which delivers quests primarily focused on catching and selling various fish across the sea. This guide explains the process of catching them and where you can sell them.
Sea of Thieves Fishing Guide: How to Catch and Sell Fish
Surprisingly, catching a fish in Sea of Thieves is not as easy as in many other games. When you snag one initially, they'll squirm and struggle to escape, and you'll have to counter their moves to bring them back. worry though! When you read this guide you will understand how to do this and become a professional fisherman in no time.
Step One: Equip Your Fishing Line
The first step is the easiest part and only requires a few button presses. You'll see what you need to do depending on the platform you're playing the game on in the lists below.
- PC
- Open your gear menu by holding Q, then press F to move to the next page.
- Highlight the fishing rod in the bottom slot and click.
- Optional: Add bait to your fishing line by opening your inventory again with Q. Then press R to open the menu and select the bait you want to attach.
- Xbox
- Open your gear menu by holding the left bumper, then press X to go to the next page.
- Highlight the fishing rod in the bottom slot and equip it to the right bumper.
- Optional: Add bait to your fishing line by opening your inventory again with the left bumper. Then press B to open the menu and select the bait you want to attach.

Step Two: Catch the Fish
This part is tricky and can be frustrating the first few times if you don't know the mechanics. We've provided instructions below for catching the fish once you've cast your line.
Third step: Sell it for rewards!
You can sell raw, undercooked, cooked and overcooked fish. Selling it to The Hunter's Call reps when perfectly cooked will net you the highest reward for that particular type of fish. However, selling it overcooked will net you the lowest reward, so be sure to check how long each fish takes to cook properly. Once you master your fishing skills, you'll find it's a decent and fun way to pass the time while you and your crew cruise the ocean. It can also net you a lot more income than you do other quests, so make sure you don't let those fish spoil in the ocean!
