Exterior cleaning
Before you start, you need to get hold of a microfiber cloth and a can of compressed air. Detach all connecting cables and lay your console flat. Pass a light trickle of air through the slots surrounding the console, then do the same with the ports on the back and the USB ports on the front. Run your microfiber cloth over the surface of the console and fold it in half to slide it inside the main slot. Avoid passing your cloth in the direction of the sensors. Before reinstalling and reconnecting your console, clean and dust the surface on which it will be placed and the surrounding area. Now you can clean your controller. This is not only a question of hygiene but also of comfort of use. Use a clean microfiber cloth, cotton swabs, toothpicks and a mild household cleaner. You can use white vinegar or alcohol mixed with water. Remove the battery or batteries. Clean crevices with toothpicks and clean hard-to-reach places with a cotton swab moistened with cleaning solution. Finish by running a damp microfiber over the entire surface of your controller. You can also use antibacterial wipes.
Why clean your console?
Cleaning your console and its controller is essential to ensure the longevity of your equipment but also for your health. Germs, bacteria, mould, food scraps among others are nestled in the nooks and crannies of your PlayStation. An investigation by Betway Insider showed that PlayStations are the dirtiest consoles, with 72,5 units of colony-forming bacteria per swab taken. We don't always have the reflex to wash our hands before grabbing our controller, or to wash it after playing. During intense gaming sessions, who doesn't splutter screaming or sweat from their hands? In order to avoid the development of potentially pathogenic bacteria, why not include cleaning your console in your weekly routine?
If you want to open your PlayStation to clean the inside, keep in mind that after-sales service will not take your console if it is still under warranty. Think carefully. Turn off and unplug your console. Open it without using a sharp object that could scratch the plastic. Run a dry brush over the circuit boards and components. Use compressed air spray if necessary. Wipe a microfiber cloth over the metal parts. If you are able, you can disassemble the fan to dust it completely. It is not advisable to open the controller to clean it because it does not have a ventilation system and is therefore not very prone to the problem of internal dust. The risk of damaging it irreparably is quite great.
