In Baldo the Guardian Owls you can collect items to help you on your journey. One of these items is the shovel. To get the shovel, you need to help the farmer and Mrs. Zirra.
To start The Farmer and the Old Shovel quest, you must first talk to the farmer. He works his field right next to where you wake up. If you talk to him he will tell you he has no use for the old shovel.

He won't give you the shovel right away. Instead, he'll mention that Ms. Zirra has had cabbages stolen and might need some help. Travel southeast and you'll enter his farm. Once on his farm, you can turn right or left at the creek to access his field. Talk to her and she will ask for your help.
To help him you will have to go back to the farmer because you need the shovel. The Farmer will then give you the shovel so that you can help Mrs. Zirra. Once you have the shovel, you can dig into patches of dirt like the one the farmer is in. By doing so, you unearth treasures and other items.
