Skyrim Marriage Guide: How to Get Married

Getting married in Skyrim is a great way to delve into the game's deeper role-playing elements. From Khajiit to Argonian and Nord, there are plenty of romance options and marriage candidates available across all 10 races. But if you're here, you're wondering how to get married.

This Skyrim wedding guide will tell you exactly how to do just that, as well as where to find an important item you'll need to get married: Mara's Amulet.

How to Get Married in Skyrim

Before looking for options for romance or marriage candidates, you will need a nice piece of jewelry for your companion. The trinket in question is Mara's Amulet, and it's a requirement to earn one of the available NPCs in the game.

To get Mara's Amulet, go to Riften and enter Mara's Temple. First talk to the priest, Maramal, about marriages, and he will tell you how marriages work in the Old Kingdom. You can then purchase an Amulet of Mara from Maramal for 200 gold. Equip the amulet to let everyone know you are available for marriage. Venture out to find your partner and get married.

However, you cannot marry just anyone. There are 66 NPCs in Skyrim that you can marry, each with special requirements to earn them. You may need to collect something for them, complete a series of quests, or even beat them to earn their love.

With Mara's Amulet equipped, and after completing a task for them, interact with NPCs to access a special dialogue option. Ask the question and they will agree to marry. It really is that easy. All that remains is to go through the wedding ceremony.

Skyrim Wedding Ceremonies

Return to Maramal and inform him that you wish to proceed with a marriage. He will need 24 hours to set everything up, so come back after that time to undergo the marriage procedure. During the ceremony, be sure to confirm your marriage, otherwise things can get a little awkward.

If for some reason you miss your own ceremony or do not confirm your marriage, you can simply reapply to the same marriage candidate, and they will accept. NPCs are apparently very forgiving when it comes to holding them up at their wedding.

With your new love, you can now enjoy married life in Skyrim. If you're not enjoying your marriage, well, divorce is not an option. But murder is. In fact, it's your only choice if you're desperate to marry another mate. We will leave that decision to you, however.
